Why is science fiction still treated as a joke at best ?
I still don’t understand why a good science fiction, is almost never the subject of debate in an art class or literature class.
You can never sit in a literature class and here a discussion about say; “the matrix” or “i am legend” but you will hear about “titanic” “the notebook” and all the other ’sappy’ movies.
To me, I cannot imagine a story more intruging than a science fiction or fantasy.
What is more exciting ? Romance novels ? , Detective novels ?, Military ?
If literature, is supposed to be about exercising your imagination, then why is science- fiction still disregarded.
Why is it that a bunch of women discussing “the notebook” can pass as a literary experience. While a bunch of men discussing The Matrix trilogy- just a bunch of geeks ?
I for one, think that the biggest joke on humanity would be if we end up with an international crisis, just a predicted by some sci-fi author.. who of course, no one bothered to read.
I completely agree. Sci fi has produced some of the most complex and intuitive literature ever to grace the world, yet most literary professionals view it as a lesser form of writing.
All I can say to this is wait. Remember that fantasy (a close cousin to scifi) is also on the lower end of the literary totem pole, yet classical literature and poetry consists strongly of fantasy related themes. Miltons paradise lost is a wonderful example of a strong literature which is purely written in fantasy. What’s to say a sci-fi interpretation of the uprising of Satan couldent one day grace the literature students course work?
I believe sci-fi literature is finding it’s roots. Already graphic novels have started inserting themselves as a recognized literary genre. My college novel for last year was Maus a graphic novel about the Holocaust. Wait a few years and see if some pieces of scifi literature find their ways onto the lists of greatest literature. I believe there are some that deserve to be there.
