What would be a good laptop to buy?
Im kind of undecided of what to buy. I want a laptop that would accomplish the following:
- Fast
- Decent memory (I download and save many things)
- Can be useful for homework (student owner)
- I want to spend a minimum of $900 and a maximum of $1500
- Vista really sucks, but macs don’t seem to be reliable as well
What would be the computer best to buy, like for example dell, compaq, apple? And what stores would have the best prices?

After many years of buying nothing but HP, I wouldn’t take one for free – that would be way too much. (When it crashes and eats the hard drive, I’ll waste hours setting up a good laptop.)
Dell Inspiron is a toy, Latitude is good but, Like Sony, overpriced.
Gateway made a couple of great laptops (I’m typing this on a P6860FX and my wife has a P7811FX) but they discontinued them. (And people wonder why they’re not a bigger company. You continue your best products, dummies, you don’t discontinue them.)
Acer and ASUS make a few good laptops, depending on what you want. Check the ormal sources, but also check http://www.directron.com/ – they can sometimes beat everyone. I’ve been dealing with them for years and have never had a complaint. (One computer’s power supply failed in about 3 minutes. They overnighted me another one. And I hadn’t paid for burning in.)
Downloading doesn’t need memory (RAM) it needs hard drive space. You can also save stuff off to an external drive. (Get the Seagate 1TB or 1.5TB drive and an external USB case and you’ll have the best drive at the best price – and loads of space.)
If you really need memory, get the 64 bit version of Vista, and a laptop that can hold at least 4GB of RAM (some can hold more, even if they don’t come with it). 32 bits addresses 4GB (like 2 decimal digits address 99 things – you can’t get 100 in 2 digits, or more than 4GB in 21 binary digits – bits). Since both the video RAM and the system RAM sdhare the same address space, you can’t have 4GB of RAM in a 32 bit operating system unless you have a video card with 0 RAM – and they don’t work too well – they can only display 0 things.
Any laptop – even a netbook – can be used for homework, unless you’re taking a CAD course.
Your price range is realistic for a computer that runs Vista well, at least at the top end. (It’s the hardware – Vista on XP-era hardware sucks. Vista on Vista-era hardware runs as well as XP on XP-era hardware. And I was one of the “Vista sucks” crowd – until I got this laptop, which can run Vista well. I still don’t like some things about it – but they had to drag me, kicking and screaming, from CP/M to DOS.)
