Google's iOS 16 lock screen widget rollout is finally complete. Last week we saw that four of the six lock screen widgets that Google announced on iOS 16 launch day were available, but now only six are available. The last two are Google Maps and Google Search, which are probably the two most popular widget sets among iPhone users.
Here's what iOS 16 lock screen widgets can do with the rest of Google's apps:
The first of the two Google Maps options is the rectangular "Frequent Trips" widget. This widget will give you directions, real-time traffic updates, and estimated arrival times for places you frequent. Near restaurants, gas stations, bars, parks, hotels, parking, etc. there is also a square search widget that you can use to search.
The Google app offers a total of four widgets. The first widget is either square or rectangular and allows you to search Google directly from your lock screen. There is a voice search widget to ask a question, sing a song to identify it, or search for something with your voice. The last two are the Lens widget for finding the camera, and the Lens shortcut that allows you to translate, shop, and do housework directly.
Starting this Thursday, Google Chrome, Google Drive, Gmail, Google News, Google Maps, and the Google app have lock screen widgets on iPhones running iOS 16. It's unclear if Google will add more widgets to its other apps in the future. The upcoming Google Home is an obvious candidate, allowing users to control other devices from the lock screen.
