Samsung Galaxy A54 could be a suitable alternative to Samsung Galaxy S23 and this mid-range phone is expected to be launched soon.

As a follow-up to last year's excellent Galaxy A53, Samsung is making a device that will appeal to people who don't want to spend hundreds of dollars to enjoy a great phone. Here's everything we know about the Samsung Galaxy A54 so far, including the release date, price and specifications.

Samsung Galaxy A54 Release Date and Price

The Samsung Galaxy S53 arrived in mid-March last year and we suspect the Galaxy A54 may follow a similar schedule. It's not just phone makers getting into the habit, we've also seen a big splash from Austrian retailer Media Mrkt.

This is something that usually happens when the launch is near, which means we won't have to wait long for Samsung to make the A54 official. However, it did not reveal a retail date, only saying that the phone "will go on sale soon".

List price rises to €499 compared to €469 for the A53. The A53 costs $449 in the US, so if the price hike is expected, we could see the dollar price increase by over $20. It's not ideal, but let's hope the Galaxy A54 stays under $500.

Samsung Galaxy A54 design and display

According to a recent leak, the Galaxy A54 could feature a 6.4-inch, 2340 x 1080 display. It's slightly smaller than last year's 6.5-inch screen, but leaked specs say the 120Hz refresh rate remains the same.

Because of these features, the microSD card should also be present, which means that the A series is not yet ready to follow the Galaxy S series and relies only on internal memory.

Given what happened with the S23 and Galaxy S23 Plus, it's unclear if the design will change. Both phones have ditched the camera bump in favor of elongated lenses similar to those found on the Galaxy S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra. It wouldn't be surprising if the A54 follows a similar design path, but that's not known yet.

The listing claims IP67 dust and water resistance, which could be a good thing, though expect the A54 to be made from cheaper materials. In other words, you can get a high-quality glass or metal finish like the Galaxy S series.

Samsung Galaxy A54 camera

In a slight change from the A53, which had a flat-lens camera on the back, the Galaxy A54 could be triple-lens. Specs leaked by Media Mrkt will include a 50MP main camera, a 12MP wide-angle lens and a 5MP macro camera, as well as a 32MP selfie camera.

The depth camera may be missing, though we're not too upset as performance is pretty average. Fortunately, the macro lens has made some significant improvements, as the A53s were pretty useless

An upgrade to a 50-megapixel primary lens would be an interesting move, and we'll have to wait and see if that rumor turns out to be true and what impact it might have on image quality. There's more to a good photo than megapixels, so that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Samsung Galaxy A54 performance

The Galaxy A series has had to compromise somewhere and lacks performance compared to flagship devices. So no Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 for Galaxy here. Instead, we'll likely see another Samsung-made Exynos chipset, preferably the 1380.

The 1380 will definitely be an upgrade to the A53's Exynos 1280 chipset. However, it is currently unclear how well it will fare in benchmark tests. We have no doubt that it will be capable enough to handle your daily smartphone tasks, but everything else remains a mystery for now.

As for other internals, specs leaked by Media Mrkt point to an entry-level model with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Those expecting more can get the 8GB/256GB model.

Samsung Galaxy A54 Battery and Charger

The Galaxy A53 featured a 5,000mAh battery with 25W wired charging, and it looks like the Galaxy A54 will continue that tradition. That's good news, as the A53 lasted 9 hours and 49 minutes in our battery tests at 120Hz and 10 hours and 38 minutes at 60Hz.

The devices on our list with the best phone battery clock in at 11.5 hours, so we wouldn't mind seeing a little more endurance from the Galaxy A54.

With similar specs, we expect the A54 to achieve at least something similar. Ideally, we'd like Android and Samsung to last a bit longer thanks to OneUI 5.1's software optimizations.

If the specs leak, wireless charging may not be available for another year. That's not particularly surprising given the A54's price range.

Samsung Galaxy A54: Appearance

The Samsung Galaxy A54 should be a good choice for a budget, but whether it will make our list of best budget phones remains to be seen. We also wonder if Samsung will release the Galaxy S23 FE and how much it might cost. Stay tuned for all the official information and our review of the Galaxy A54.
