Vivo X Fold 2, X Flip Launched: A Lineup To Take On Samsung's Best

TL; doctor

  • Vivo has launched the X Fold 2 and X Flip foldable phones in China.
  • Both phones offer Snapdragon and ZEISS silicon cameras.
  • Don't hold your breath for a global release soon if that's the case.

Vivo is no stranger to foldable phones, having launched the vivo X Fold and X Fold Plus in 2022. These were book-style foldables aimed at the Galaxy Z Fold series. Now the company has launched the vivo X Fold 2 with its first foldable case.

Both sophisticated devices have two things in common: ZEISS-branded cameras and the purely Chinese skin of OriginOS 3. But the devices are quite different in their offerings.

Vivo X Flip

The Vivo X Flip is the company's first foldable phone and features a 3-inch display. That's a much larger screen compared to the Galaxy Z Flip 4's tiny 1.9-inch bezel.

Open the X Flip and you'll be presented with a 6.74-inch 120Hz (FHD+, 1200 nits) OLED display with ultra-thin glass. The foldable device also has a Flex mode that allows you to multitask on the phone. Interestingly, Vivo claims that the X Flip's hinge can be folded and unfolded 500,000 times.

Flip-flops don't have the most impressive camera systems, and the X Flip is no different. A dual rear camera system is expected, consisting of a 50MP primary camera (IMX866V with OIS) and a 12MP ultra-wide lens. The latter also has autofocus, so you can take macro shots with a super-fast shutter. There's also a 32-megapixel selfie camera on the foldable display, but you can also take selfies using the rear cameras along with the shutter.

Other specs include a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 processor, a 4,400mAh battery with 44W wired charging (no wireless charging here), and a fingerprint scanner.

Vivo X Fold 2:

Want a tablet-sized screen in your pocket? That's where the vivo X Fold 2 comes in, with a book form factor 8.03-inch 120Hz LTPO OLED (1916 x 2160, 4:3.55 aspect ratio, 1800 nits/square meter) foldable display. The company claims that this screen has ultra-thin glass for extra protection.

The foldable Vivo retains its predecessor's Flex Mode feature, allowing the phone to make hands-free video calls, play videos or take photos. The company adds that the hinge is rated for 400,000 folds, but is tight-lipped on how much it folds for the screen.

Meanwhile, vivo X Fold 2 offers a 6.53-inch 120Hz (OLED, 120Hz) smart display. This gives it a 21:9 aspect ratio, which is more suited to traditional phone screens than Samsung's foldable devices.

Like Vivo's previous foldables, the phone's foldable and display are equipped with ultrasonic fingerprint sensors. This is a departure from competing models, which typically have a side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

The foldable device also offers a 4800mAh battery, 120W wired charging and 50W wireless charging. Vivo believes that as a result you can charge to 100% in 26 minutes.

In terms of photography capabilities, the X Fold 2 offers a 50MP main camera (IMX866V with OIS), a 12MP ultra-wide lens and a 2x12MP telephoto camera. There is also a 16MP camera on the phone's screen.
