Enrico Sangiuliano Drops ‘Physical Change And Talks His Philosophy When Making Music
At 4 am, the warehouse smells of cigarettes and weed, the dance floor is lit up with strobe lights, and people are dancing to music from a subwoofer. This is the perfect place for a techno rave. This is the perfect place for Enrico Sangiuliano.
The artist's voice can be described as detailed, layered, deep and ready to travel, proving him to be one of the most respected contemporary techno producers. His polished voice is reflected on his latest EP , Physical Change, released today, May 5th.
The two-track track features powerful bass lines, sliding, spinning synths, catchy lyrics, cinematic melodies, and melodic vocals. “Physical change is the inevitability of transformation,” Sangiuliano says. Whether it be sonic dynamics, emotions or linguistic phrasing, it is relentless. He adds that even the notes played on the instrument differ from the previous and next notes, depending on the pressure of your fingers and you render. Musical instruments each tone is unique when touched.
"Change happens whether we like it or not," says the sound engineer.
According to Sangiuliano, the title track begins with a psychedelic, hypnotic, and progressive ambiance, before gradually transitioning into a more electronic sound. The same beat plays the same tune throughout the song, but changes each time, demonstrating the tastemaker's intention to showcase the concept of change on the EP. Also, the line above that says "physical change" and "chemical change" repeatedly refers to a mutation.
Another tune, "Pulse of Progress", is the B-side of the physical change on the vinyl release. The song is a "sophisticated, highly colorful and melodic techno track", says the author. The "speed of progression" is dynamic and changes over time from closing to booming. Then the central breakdown begins, as each element begins to play softly, and then the crescendo explodes. Of course, the physical change is dance-ready and sure to get people stomping their feet to their technically crushing, aggressive, and functional beats.
Sanguliano's music-making philosophy is to tell the story that motivated the launch of his limited-time label NINETOZERO. The tentative track will consist of 10 releases, counting from nine to zero, when zero is reached the label will be closed. His mission in NINETOZERO is to take control of the musical narrative and gain space for its expression. He added that having his own platform gives him complete freedom to shape the dialogue from his point of view. In addition to telling stories, his approach to making music includes thinking about what he lacks on stage as a DJ.
"What's my next secret weapon for the next club, festival, or rave? It's the same when you're a DJ. When I'm doing music that inspires me and gives an idea of how it can affect an audience, I think about what I can create while in the studio. DJing and production are two very symbiotic disciplines in my life." , are important for balance."
NINETOZERO is associated with its own series of solo events, with each show revolving around the release of a track and introducing audiences to the ideals of 90's club culture through Sangiuliano's immersive recordings. When the Italian producer started playing sets from start to finish, with DJs playing throughout the show, he found himself playing more dynamically and better than the shorter sets. line aperture. He added that DJing for an hour and a half to two hours is hard because "you have to push yourself and get as strong as you can be in a short amount of time". Playing in groups all night allowed him to take guests on a journey through different genres of percussion, starting, for example, with groundbreaking music, and then gradually moving into deeper and more complex melodies.
"It's a journey into the world of sound that takes the listener down a very rare path," says Sanguliano. "[It] allows me to play a lot of songs as a DJ that I could never play with a smaller standard DJ slot. You can feel it. The atmosphere and energy between me and the crowd is insane. Because we are one. It's a very interesting experience."
The Emilia-born and raised artist recently worked with his wife, techno queen Charlotte de Witt, to create reflections. Powerful bass, catchy lyrics, catchy vocals, and intimidating synths - the single combines their great sound. While Sangiuliano says the process was fun, it was also challenging because of their different approaches in the studio: Sangiuliano explores the endless possibilities of melody, while DeWitt knows exactly what he wants and finds the right beats instantly.
"The result is a little worse than my [and] [de Wit's] technique," he says. "But you also feel like there are a few more distinct features to my style and sound design that are a bit more typical of my style."
The text reads: "What's your reflection? Find your direction, tap to think of yourself with no vocal reflection." The single reached No. 1 on the Beatport charts and all other NINETOZERO tracks achieved similar results.
Although Sangiuliano's favorite releases change often, his favorite song at the time of the interview (April 26, 2023) is the upcoming NINETOZERO tune. He says he falls in love with different paths because each path represents the time he entered the creative dimension. He adds that he never creates "fill-in" entries.
The creator of Jovuk first entered the world of dance music at the age of seven, when he recorded tracks for the radio. At the time he was living in northern Italy and had a popular local radio station broadcasting live the club's first strike from Brescia. He recorded these groups and divided the recordings into genres: techno, trance, hardcore and drum and bass.
"These four genres were the first big inspiration for Futuristic Shape," says the audio engineer.
This musical style, which awakened his interest in music, was a turning point for the producer. Since his early interest in dance music, Sangiuliano has gone on to dominate dance floors around the world. In fact, he has proven himself to be one of the best developers of modern technology today.
